Designated Learning Institution (DLI) 

  • International students intending to study at a post-secondary school must have a letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution to apply for a study permit
  • Students must check the program and school to determine if it meets the requirements for a post-graduation work permit upon program completion
  • Go here to check the Designated Learning Institution number of the school you would like to attend and see if its programs are eligible for a post-graduation-work-permit

Different Levels of Programs Offered in Canada

Universities in Canada Offer:

  • Undergraduate Degree
  • Bachelor’s degree usually needs 3 to 4 years of full-time study in a specialization or general study
  • Associate degree is only available in British Columbia in Canada


  • Graduate Degree
  • Master’s Degree needs a completion of an undergraduate degree (bachelor’s)
  • Doctoral Degree needs a completion of a Master’s degree


Colleges/Institutes in Canada offer:

  • Diploma
  • Usually needs 2 years of full-time study
  • Advanced Diploma
  • Usually needs 3 years of full-time study
  • Certificate
  • Depending on the program, it can be a few months to 1 year of full-time study
  • Graduate Certificate
  • Usually requires a diploma or degree to be eligible for the program which is usually 1 year of full-time study
